Why choosing this area??

A new center island. Renewing the void filled spaces, and giving them a function. Trying to make them useful as they have been in the past years.
The reason of choosing this part of area is the necessity of a new center for the area and also for the whole city. This is the start of changing the urban structure from one centered city into a many centers city. Its position is good to put there many functions, institutional, business, services and entertainment. Being located between the river and railway makes it more interesting dealing with the area within the whole urban contest. Building a center in this place can be more difficult but also very useful for the area that does not have any direct connection with the city center. This center will make a better delivery of the city pressure from the big center to this small one and vice versa. The inspiration for this center was taken by the analysis that lead us to the island concept. This center will have very close connections with its surroundings due to these functional stripes. This whole industrial complex is appropriate for the new activities to settle there.
Considering the river is indispensable because it is an important part of the area. This natural breathing makes the division of two different urban typologies of the two sides of the river, which will fit to the landscape.

ALBANIA _____further studies...
_ team: Olesja / Ina

Zoom in / Zoom out
The information necessary to complete this task was provided by our professors B. Aliaj and S. Dhamo, in cooperation with CO-PLAN.

To complete this task we did some schematic maps, representing several information about Albania such as: population density, land use, infrastructure and tourism. As you can notice, the most concentrated area of the country is the west, or how we call it “The Western Lowland”, and less dense the south-east & south.
In the communist period the Western Lowland was one of the most used areas for agriculture. This was a policy of the regime, by changing wasteland in useful land for agriculture, but sometimes their trials resulted unsuccessful.

After the falling of the regime this areas turned back to their original nature. Concerning the future prognosis, agriculture will still be a part of the country economic sources, still concentrated in the Western Lowland.
Regarding infrastructure: new roads are being built day by day all around the country, so in a future perspective they will look like capillary traversing the whole country from edge to edge.

The first tourism map shows the situation during the communism period. As it is shown the most important is the seaside tourism on the whole coast. The other types of tourism were not so popular at that time. As the country was undeveloped, there are few number of spots on the map.The prediction for tourism in the future is in the changing of its strategy. It will not be based only in seaside tourism but it will be expanded in other areas, mountainous ones. So this kind of tourism will be more developed in Albania.

Merging together....

In the last three sketch maps I have merged the layers of density, infrastructure and land use, just to give a complete idea of Albanian life during communist, post-communist era and maybe even future.

Polaroids, collages, sketches, in one week Workshop
team: Olesja_Marian_Poliksen

These three polaroids represents the first impressions of the area.
After analyzing them, we ended up with some concepts to be followed for the project.

- The first one was a result of "Cause and Effect" polaroid – which led to the idea of the Grid _interpreted as a Layering analysis of the whole area_. Starting from the map_ an unclear situation_ continuing with several interventions _ and ending with a micro-chip_ the idea of an organized city, where the importance of several areas differ from each other depending on the height. A situation where we Keep_ Add_ Renovate
- The second one was a result of “Gradiation of Exposure”. This is more an expressive idea of the situation between the two river banks. On the higher side we imagined the dense city pushing toward the river_ with its noise and movement_ than a promenade (the direct relation between peoples and river)_ the river itself_ and on the lower bank a relaxing area.
- The third one is a mixture between the first two collages, but the idea of the island came directly from the “Limits of Responsibility” pola. Where people are creating their sanctuaries like small islands on all that chaos.

Yep, so here comes the final composition with
polas, sketches, collages, analysis and
a proposal project for the whole area.
