REASONS &FUNCTIONS OF THE STEEL
CITY INSIDE THE STEEL
HUMAN INSIDE STEEL In the years of histroy, this area has been an industrial one. This industry has given birth to it. Now it is not anymore. But people have lived there for so long and still do. Steel is this symbol of the industry that should remain in time to remember the industry existed there. But it is as well a very contemporanean design which makes it acceptable for nowdays life.
STEEL STRUCTURE
The aim of this project, is design of space and not the real territory. Covering the space in a steel structure, will change people’s perception for their city. It is an irregular structure, a moving structure that changes dimension in every step people follow it. So they can perceive their space differently. This makes the city be developed inside a flexible architecture instead of a mobile one. Covering it, not with in a cover makes the light spread freely in the spatial. This is directly connected to the light &shade concept. What is important in a city is the perception of space as a light & air resource. Light should be very present in a city, make it breathe freely.
EVENT CITY
The events of multiple uses are linked together by this steel. This gives steel a function and makes it be used as a designing element and also a space designer. The event is situated in the land and be developed in space. It is an an event perceived in space, or called differently a spatial event.
SCALE
They both are in contrast according to the used real scale. The steel is a physic link itself of the events, so the event in a big scale should have inside itself a very small scale of this structure. In other cases where the event is nearly invisible the steel is a very big structure perceived as an object in space, also whith its inside space. Sometimes they can be follies. So the structure in order to be a link it can be the event.

We were based on the theories of Yona Friedman about the:
UTOPIA CITY, SPATIAL CITY
ARTIFICIAL TOPOGRAPHY
SPACE CHAINS
LIGHT SHOULD SPREAD FREELY IN THE SPATIAL.

STORYBOARD & TEXT-COLLAGE

PROJECT OUTLINE

The site we have chosen to work on, is an EX-INDUSTRIAL area. It is located between the railway and the RIVER and also between the first and second bridge in the west. The aim of the project is to convert this area into a NEW CENTER, to contribute on giving birth to a POLYCENTRIC city, Tirana. We chose this area for its location between the center of Tirana, and Kamza. This direction is the same to the Metropolitan AXIS which is now developing and expanding toward West. Our dilemmas on the beginning were that, what precisely would happen to the ex-industrial site? What would happen to the houses near by the river?

Our strategy was to make a new analysis from the project. We divided the area in LINES (itinerary), POINTS (nodes), and SURFACE (areas). By this analysis we got the concept of the STRIPES. Our stripe will be organized as an EVENT CITY, meaning that the stripe will have several urban events spread along it. In this context the river will be an event itself, not a BORDER anymore.

Considering the dilemmas we had at first, we think we can change the CAUSE into SOLUTION itself. The ex-industrial area that has been the main problem for that site was the input. So we think that we can use only one industrial element to represent the stripes and the way that project is going to be developed. This is not only a designing element but also very significant for the HISTORY of the area. This element will be the SPACE DESIGNER and in other URBAN MOMENT will be a volume designed in SPACE. Using the STEEL as a very strong symbol might seem a very radical strategy. But our aim was to compose a scenario between UTOPIA and REALITY. Our strategy and project are merged together to transform the ex-industrial into a contemporaneous steel PLAY in the urban context.

Our scenario includes several events that are expanded all over the site. Entering the site in front of your eyes the old CHIMNEY in BRICK rises up make people feel so tiny about their measures. The main event happens in the MUSEUM building. Going out the museum toward the cinema you face a massive wall that hides the cinema building. This trick makes people curious of what is behind this huge WALL. Following the steel structure that comes out spontaneously, you are walking along the river. NO EVENT AT ALL. Keep walking and you arrive unconsciously at the small PIAZZA’S, surrounded by small shops, caffes. Behind them there is a HIGHER SILHOUETTE of the commercial &business offices. The SCALE is a key element of our project. The moving scale makes people experience many FEELINGS. Going further, LES FOLLIES (massive art works) germinate of ground. The space empty of events is just a relaxing area, where people feel free and CREATE their own events. Two lines pass tangentially to you, the tram way and the river. The river event is the GREEN BRIDGE PROMENADE. This is the element that changes river’s function from boundary in the part of the whole area. Some of the bridges hold some events. What you can see beyond is the PARK where events are spread all over the GREEN.

_we do not respect anymore the centric city with the Skanderbeg square, but we decompose the nuclei and change it into STRIPES_

some_explanations

Gates: gates are shown only to express the three main entrances, where all the flux of movement is concentrated.
Nodes: nodes will be the mini centers of this new CITY STRIPED CENTER.
Itinerary: itineraries, are long following trails which cross the area in different directions. They will connect nodes.

16.06.09_ROUGH SITEPLAN_APPLYING SUN & SHADE CONCEPT in the urban context
It would be called "STRIPED TIRANA"...

Defining several kinds of shadows, in a physical and philosophical way helps in organizing the urban context. This can be partly developed in the project, because it is just a concept as a first input. We concentrated in the idea of: points, surfaces, and itineraries. We have based our project in these concepts as points of analysis and plan also.

Nodes will be the start for the existing and new itineraries. These itineraries will make the connection of surfaces. The surfaces are the spaces in between itineraries, which will be multifunctional stripes. The textured sketch which fills in the stripes is related directly with the photomontage concept, and every texture has a different sun & shade function.

The pictures of the site in pellicle, represents the sun and shade concept and transmits the feeling of the shade in the area. We have also shown the main nodes and itineraries.

WORKSHOP_06.10.09_ URBAN PLACE FORM

This model represents a type of a building, one of the towers in that area. This quick and dirty model made in paper and transparent shows the idea of one climate issue transformed in architecture. What we have chosen is sun and shade.
Brisoleil’s, are the elements utilized to give the idea of Light and Shadow architecture_ (represented with the white stripes). Also a curved atrium, which flows from the top of the higher building, to its bottom, is another important element providing light and ventilation in the inner areas of the building.
